Superior Insulation begins firestopping work at Detroit area hospital

Superior Insulation | Projects | Henry Ford Destination: Grand

Superior Insulation is proud to be part of the construction team for Henry Ford Health’s transformative “Destination: Grand” expansion in Detroit.

This ambitious project marks a new era for healthcare in the city, with a state-of-the-art hospital facility rising directly across from the historic Henry Ford Hospital campus, which will continue to serve the community.

Project overview: Setting a new standard in healthcare

The new hospital is designed to be a beacon of advanced care and innovation. Spanning approximately 1.2 million square feet, the facility will feature a striking 20-floor patient tower with 432 all-private, high-tech patient rooms. Five floors will be dedicated to specialized intensive care units, ranging from cardiovascular to neurological specialties, underscoring Henry Ford Health’s commitment to world-class patient outcomes. The top three floors, with 72 beds, will provide inpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation in partnership with the renowned Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

A vastly expanded emergency department will occupy the ground floor, offering 75,000 square feet of modern treatment space with 100 private, flexible rooms, including a secure 10-room area for behavioral health care. The facility will also house 28 new operating rooms capable of accommodating the most complex surgical procedures, from transplants to brain surgery.

Superior Insulation’s role: Comprehensive firestopping solutions

Superior Insulation has been entrusted with the full firestopping package for the Destination: Grand project. Our scope of work covers every firestopping penetration throughout the facility, from the patient tower and diagnostic podium to the shared services building and mechanical spaces. By sealing all penetrations, we will ensure the integrity of the building’s fire-resistance rating, helping to compartmentalize the structure and protect patients, staff and visitors in the event of a fire.

Our experienced team utilizes industry-leading firestop materials and adheres to all relevant codes and standards. Every installation is carefully documented, inspected and coordinated with other trades to ensure seamless integration and uncompromising safety.

Commitment to safety, timeliness and quality

Safety is paramount on a project of this scale and complexity. Superior Insulation employees will follow rigorous OSHA guidelines and industry best practices at every stage, from pre-planning through final inspection. Our team’s proactive communication and detailed project management will ensure that all firestopping work is completed safely, on time and on budget.

“We are very excited to play a role in a cornerstone project in Detroit,” said Superior Insulation Project Manager Josh Stachowiak. “A project like this will stand as a reminder for years to come of the time and hard work put in to provide the best possible product for our customer and the people of Detroit.”

Building for the future of Detroit healthcare

Destination: Grand is more than a hospital; it is a symbol of progress and hope for the city of Detroit. With features such as a glass-clad, triangular patient tower oriented for optimal views, a 185,000-square-foot shared services building, and a Central Energy Hub for efficient heating and cooling, the project exemplifies modern, sustainable healthcare design.

Superior Insulation is honored to contribute to this legacy by delivering firestopping solutions that meet the highest standards of safety and performance. Our work ensures that this new healthcare destination will serve Detroit for generations to come.
