Superior Insulation Completes Firestop Work at Pittsburgh Airport

Superior Insulation completed a firestop project at the Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh.

We take pride in tackling some of the most complex and demanding firestopping projects in the industry, and this work was a testament to our team’s expertise, attention to detail and unwavering commitment to safety and quality.

Project Overview

Located roughly 16 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh, the airport is a critical transportation hub serving more than 9 million travelers annually. For a facility of this scale and importance, ensuring the highest standards of fire protection is non-negotiable.

Superior Insulation was selected to install a rated expansion joint in a building section that required robust fire resistance and the flexibility to accommodate structural movement.

Specialized Firestop Installation

The challenge on this project was unique, as the area required a fire-rated expansion joint that could maintain the integrity of the fire rating while allowing the building’s segments to move independently. Changes in temperature, humidity or the addition of weight to the structure can cause movement, and all these factors had to be considered.

Our team installed a specialized system designed to flex with the building, ensuring continuous fire protection without compromising safety or performance.

Unlike traditional firestopping solutions that rely primarily on caulks or sealants, this installation required a more nuanced approach.

“This install perfectly showcases our abilities beyond what the most commonly assumed firestopping solution is, which would be caulk,” said Superior Insulation Project Manager Josh Stachowiak. “Our installers took special care to install the right product for the right application in a way that maintains Superior Insulation’s high-quality standards.”

Commitment to Safety and Industry Best Practices

Safety is at the core of every Superior Insulation project, and the Pittsburgh Airport installation was no exception. Our team followed all OSHA and industry best practices throughout the project lifecycle, from pre-planning and product selection to installation and final inspection.

Every step was meticulously documented and supervised to ensure that both our workers and the traveling public were always protected.
